In a move that can at best be described as ‘perplexing’ United States President George WALKER Bush has praised Australia’s newly elected Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, saying that he respects “somebody who does what they say they are going to do”. This statement sharply rebukes ex-Prime Minister John Howards suggestion that the strong alliance between the US and Australia would be severed if Kevin Rudd was elected, to add insult to injury George Bush called Kevin Rudd a ‘man of steel’, taking away the pet name that he had originally given John Howard.

“I respect somebody who does what they say they are going to do,” Mr Bush said, referring to Labor’s election promise.
“But he also acted like you expect an ally to act and he has consulted closely with us.”
Mr Rudd revealed Australia was giving a $165m assistance package to the Iraqi Government to help train their farmers – but only after Mr Bush mentioned the initiative in his opening remarks.
Mr Bush was even willing to transfer his favoured nickname, “Man of Steel”, from Mr Howard to Mr Rudd, which prompted a hearty chuckle in the Labor leader.
