It’s an injection that has a similar effect to a vasectomy, it lasts three months with limited study on 1756 men showing it can perform as an effective contraception in 95% of males. The ANZAC research institute may be on to something big here though it looks like it might not be going anywhere with some sponsors backing out and the government not showing much of an interest in the project.
One of the projects researchers, Professor Liu, says major pharmaceutical companies have dropped out and that the government itself may not be fully aware of the demand for a male contraceptive such as this one. “I think there’s a real need for it because I see a lot of couples where a female doesn’t want to use or is intolerant to a female contraceptive pill or males who want to delay vasectomy” he said adding that “My perception is that people want it but it seems to be that somehow that isn’t being heard at a government level”.
The contraceptive works by suppressing sperm output, it is largely composed of androgen and progestin and lasts for up to three months. Theoretically and with limited research there doesn’t seem to be any adverse side effects, it works on 95% of males and will really help improve the lives of many people.
Contraceptive for men a shot in the arm
Whether or not you’re an Australian citizen I highly recommend you contact the Queensland government on this issue. While the contraceptive is being developed in Australia its results could really help the entire planet.
If you have any ideas on what we can do to get the word out on this contraceptive be sure to tell us on the forums.

unfortunately, I don’t think 95% is high enough – you would have to somehow get tested to see whether you are the 1 in 20 that this is not going to work for.

It wouldn’t be too difficult of a test, just give a sperm sample a week or two later and test the sperm count. It might get a bit too expensive to be marketable, though, although it would be nice not to need condoms quite as often.

I think it’s a great idea, even if it’s only 95% effective. It would still be great as a backup form of birth control, in case she forgets her pill that day, or the condom breaks.

How many women ‘forget’ to take their birth control pills or simply lie about taking them to get pregnant so that they can try to lock a man into marrying them when they announce their pregnant…?
My brothers, how many surprise pregnancies have turned into bad marriages and leave us on the financially and hook for 18-22 years?
We’ll be marching in the streets for access to this… as long as it’s not football season

Ha!
How many men plead to not wear a condom? They tell us they are ‘allergic’ to latex and can’t ‘feel’ us? How many lie and tell us they will ‘pull out’ before they are finished…?
Then leave us, …?
My sisters, how many men have left pregnant without taking emotional and financial responsibility caring for a child for 30+ years?
We’ll be marching in the streets for access to this… as long as it also stretches their noses so we can see if they are lying.

The moral of the story is: people have the great potential to suck no matter their gender. More birth control is better!

You do know that condoms are only 88-98% effective, diaphragms are only 81-95% effective, sponges are 72-82% effective, and only the female birth control is about 98% effective?
If 95% of men have 100% (an assumption) protection from impregnating their partners, that’s REALLY good.

Supressed? really? …
the problem is the 95% thats only as effective as a mal positioned rubber..
and who wants to be injected with hormones anyways?
they screw with our thinking enough already….
we already have the pill the rythm method condoms, iuds (copper please).. maybee the market is just saturated…

Ok, Vince… I’m for the male contraceptive shot as well, but only if they make it more than 95% effective. How many WOMEN have gotten pregnant by men who lie about being “fixed” or refuse to wear a condom and “accidentally” spill into her (or close enough!), leaving HER to go through a pregnancy alone as well as raise the innocent one alone, while they cut and run and never look back?! “Financially on-the-hook”? Is that what being a responsible father means to you? LADIES.. STEER CLEAR OF THIS MALE HUMAN (definitely NOT a MAN!)!!!!

Before reaching any real conclusions about using this, we need to understand that “95%” figure better. Does it mean that for 95% of men it’s 100% effective? If true, I agree that would be REALLY good, but it seems a bit unlikely to me. Or does it mean that on average, for a couple that has sex regularly and uses no other birth control, there will be only 5% as many pregnancies IN A YEAR than there would be with no birth control (err, or is it that only 5% of the couples will get pregnant?)? This is the standard measure of effectiveness for birth control methods; as I recall, the pill for women achieves about 98% in this measure. If so, I agree that 95% by itself isn’t good enough — that would still be a lot of unwanted pregnancies. But as one layer in a multi-layer plan it makes a lot of sense.

“It can perform as an effective contraception in 95% of males”.
They way I’m reading it they mean it was effective on 95 percent of the men that were tested.

I’ll gladly take it. Condoms suck when your girlfriend is allergic to the pill, (however non-PC it may be to say that).

You don’t want to be injected with hormones, but are okay with women taking the pill, which is a hormone? Seems somewhat unfair. :-/

To a:
Yes, I have heard of abortions, and I can’t imagine that any woman is going to be happy about having to undergo invasive, expensive (depending upon outcome of the NHS postcode lottery, the lady might have to seek private treatment), and (according to many people) morally-questionable surgery because some idiot placed his pleasure above her right to decide what enters her body. The abortion pill is not pleasant either: I’ve heard the contractions it causes described as like being kicked in the stomach repeatedly for two days straight.
If hormonal contraception is good enough for women, then it is good enough for men. The combined pill increases a woman’s risk of having a stroke four-fold: you might want to consider that the next time that you are thinking of dumping all of the contraceptive responsibility onto your wife or girlfriend!

“It’s a mystery: Some men do not respond to MHCs” at the end of http://malecontraceptives.org/methods/hormonal.php explains the 95% of males bit.

Influencing anyone’s hormones in a synthetic manner always leads to side effects or long term developments – how can it not?
The best alternative is to be fully informed on all side effects and research the most effective natural methods – healthier for both sexes.
I use the Ladycomp from http://www.healthybirthcontrol.com and it’s the best contraceptive we have ever used (99.3% effective) with NO side effects.
